Start with a visit to Fisherman's Bastion on Castle Hill where you'll enjoy incredible panoramic views from the lookout towers. While you're there check out the beautiful white Matthias Church.

The tale of two cities

Budapest is actually two cities – Buda and Pest, which sit on opposite sides of the Danube. They were brought together as one in 1872, and ever since then it has been at the heart of European history. Centred on the incredible St Stephen's Basilica - a building so important that others can't be built any taller in the city - the attractions of Budapest pop up around every corner.

The beautiful Buda Castle, perched on a hill overlooking Pest, is a great place to start your adventure. Take the world-famous Széchenyi Chain Bridge over the Danube, stopping at any markets that may be hosted along it, before admiring the English-inspired Houses of Parliament. From here you can dip into the city centre, filled with an incredible number of shops, restaurants and bars. And speaking of dipping in, don't forget to enjoy one of the city's many thermal baths

Ruin pubs & ship clubs

One of the most unique things about Budapest is its nightlife scene, in the old Jewish Quarter you must visit the eclectic "ruin pubs". The original, Szimpla Kert, opened in 2001 in an abandoned factory; expect bric-a-brac furniture, graffiti and even an old Trabant car to sit in. For a club experience go to Instant, the biggest ruin pub which spans an impressive 20 rooms over an entire apartment building.

A38 is a recycled Ukranian 1968 stonehauler moored on the Danube river, nowadays it's a major music venue. Looking for a relaxed drink? Gozsdu Udvar connects 6 courtyards with a variety of bars and restaurants to choose from. Or for something sophisticated try Budapest Jazz Club, you won't be disappointed.
